New York & the Hamptons in October: My 7-Day Fall Getaway 🍎🍂🌊

New York & the Hamptons in October: My 7-Day Fall Getaway 🍎🍂🌊

There is something about New York in October that just feels different. The temperatures start cooling down, the leaves begin changing, the city gets that beautiful fall energy, and suddenly a seven-day getaway sounds like exactly what the doctor ordered.

So, I’m planning a 7-day October trip to New York City and the Hamptons—a little city excitement, a little luxury, plenty of good food, sightseeing, shopping, and hopefully enough downtime to actually enjoy the trip instead of running around like I’m competing on The Amazing Race. 😂

The goal? New York City first, then the Hamptons for a change of scenery.

Day 1: Welcome to New York 🗽

The adventure starts in New York City.

After arriving and checking into the hotel, I’d keep the first day relatively easy. There’s no reason to arrive exhausted and immediately try to see 47 attractions.

The first mission: get something good to eat.

New York is one of those cities where food can become an entire vacation activity. A casual lunch, a slice of pizza, soul food, Chinese food, a deli sandwich, or a nice dinner can all become part of the experience.

After dinner, I’d take a relaxed walk around the neighborhood and soak up that unmistakable New York energy.

The lights.

The traffic.

The people.

The noise.

The feeling that something is always happening.

That first night would be about settling in and reminding myself: I made it to New York!

Day 2: Classic New York City 🗽📸

Day two is when the sightseeing begins.

I’d start with one of the city's most recognizable attractions: Times Square.

Yes, it’s touristy.

Yes, it can be crowded.

And yes, I’m still going.

You cannot go to New York for the first time—or return after a long break—and not at least experience Times Square.

After that, I’d head toward Central Park.

October is perfect for enjoying the park because the weather can be cool and comfortable, and the fall scenery can make the city feel completely different.

I’d take plenty of pictures because, let's be honest, if you went to New York and didn't take pictures, did the trip even happen?

From there, I’d spend some time walking around Manhattan, checking out stores, grabbing coffee, and people-watching.

New York is basically reality television without the production crew.

Somebody is always arguing.

Somebody is dressed like they’re going to Fashion Week.

Somebody is rushing somewhere.

And somebody is probably filming TikTok content in the middle of the sidewalk.

Day 3: Downtown Manhattan 🏙️

Day three would be about exploring downtown.

I’d head toward Lower Manhattan, taking in the architecture and visiting some of the city's historic areas.

A trip to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum would be an important stop. It’s not just another tourist attraction—it’s a place to slow down and reflect.

Afterward, I’d walk around the surrounding area and eventually make my way toward the waterfront.

One thing I love about New York is how quickly the scenery changes.

You can be surrounded by skyscrapers one minute and standing near the water the next.

Later, I’d head toward SoHo and Greenwich Village for shopping, restaurants, and that neighborhood atmosphere.

This would be my “walk around until I get tired” day.

And when my feet start filing complaints?

It’s time for dinner.

Day 4: Brooklyn & a Night Out 🌉

Day four would take me across the river to Brooklyn.

I’d spend some time exploring Brooklyn and, of course, make my way toward the Brooklyn Bridge.

Walking across the bridge gives you one of those classic New York moments that feels almost cinematic.

Manhattan in the distance.

The skyline.

The river.

The bridge.

The camera comes out immediately.

After exploring Brooklyn, I’d find a good restaurant and enjoy a leisurely meal.

Then it’s back into Manhattan for an evening out.

Maybe live music.

Maybe a comedy show.

Maybe a lounge.

Maybe just a nice dinner followed by a nighttime walk.

The beauty of New York is that you don't necessarily need a perfectly scheduled evening.

Sometimes the best memories happen when you simply say, “Let's see what happens.”

Day 5: Road Trip to the Hamptons 🚗🌊

Now comes the change of scenery.

The Hamptons.

After four busy days in New York City, I’d head east toward Long Island.

The Hamptons in October aren't the same as the summer Hamptons—and that's exactly why I like the idea.

The crowds can be lighter, the atmosphere can feel calmer, and the fall season gives everything a different personality.

Instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, this part of the trip would be about relaxing.

I’d explore Southampton and East Hampton, walk around the villages, check out local shops, take pictures, and enjoy the scenery.

And yes, I’d probably look at some of those ridiculous houses and wonder:

Who exactly has $25 million sitting around for a vacation home?

Certainly not me. 😂

But looking is free.

Day 6: Hamptons Relaxation 🍂

Day six would be my slow-down day.

No alarm clock.

No rushing.

No trying to see everything.

Just breakfast, coffee, a walk, shopping, and enjoying the surroundings.

October is a beautiful time for a coastal getaway because you're getting the fall atmosphere without necessarily dealing with the peak summer crowds.

I’d take a walk near the water, visit local stores, find a nice lunch spot, and spend the afternoon taking photographs.

This is also the day I’d probably reflect on the trip.

New York City is loud, fast, crowded, exciting and constantly moving.

The Hamptons offer the opposite feeling.

Quiet.

Relaxed.

Scenic.

Together, they make a great combination for a seven-day trip.

Day 7: One Last Taste of New York ❤️

Eventually, every vacation has that annoying final day.

You wake up and realize:

“Wait… I have to go home?”

Before leaving, I’d have one final breakfast and maybe make one last stop for shopping or sightseeing.

I’d probably buy a few souvenirs, grab something good to eat, take a ridiculous number of final pictures and enjoy those last few hours.

Then it would be time to head home with a suitcase full of clothes, souvenirs, pictures, receipts, and memories.

And hopefully, enough money left in my bank account to survive the rest of the month. 😂

My October New York Dream

This trip wouldn't be about trying to prove I can visit every attraction in seven days.

It would be about experiencing the city.

I want the New York energy, the food, the music, the neighborhoods, the skyline, the shopping and the people.

Then I want the Hamptons calm, the water, the villages, the fall scenery and the opportunity to breathe.

That's what makes this trip appealing.

Four days of New York City. Three days around the Hamptons. Seven days of adventure.

And October feels like the perfect month for it.

Of course, the real challenge isn't planning the itinerary.

It's the budget.

Because New York has a special talent for making your wallet disappear faster than a reality-TV friendship after the reunion. 😂

So the mission is simple: find affordable airfare, a reasonably priced hotel, inexpensive transportation, good food without spending a fortune, and enough money left over to actually enjoy myself.

If I can pull that off, this could be one unforgettable fall vacation.

Final Thoughts

A seven-day New York and Hamptons trip gives me a little bit of everything.

City life.

History.

Food.

Shopping.

Entertainment.

Beautiful scenery.

Relaxation.

And plenty of opportunities for pictures and stories.

New York City has always had that larger-than-life reputation. The Hamptons bring another side of New York—the quieter, coastal side.

Put them together in October, and you've got a vacation that feels like two trips in one.

Now comes the fun part:

Planning it, saving for it, booking it—and trying not to spend the entire travel budget before I even get on the plane. 😂✈️

What Would You Do?

If you had 7 days in New York and the Hamptons in October, what would you put on your itinerary?

Would you spend more time in New York City or the Hamptons?

What restaurant would you absolutely have to try?

And most importantly—what is the one New York attraction I should NOT miss?
